The Department of Haematology which is situated in the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Academic Complex at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital (IALCH) offers a tertiary/quaternary level of haematology service to the province of KZN. The laboratory serves a population of over 11 million people and provides most of the specialized laboratory Haematology testing for KZN. Additionally, the department oversees the clinical haematology service at King Edward Vlll Hospital. The Department currently has a Head of Department, 6 pathologists, 5 full-time registrars and 2 intern medical scientists.

The department contributes to the training of intern medical scientists, undergraduate medical students (3rd, 4th and 6th year small group teaching and lectures), medical technology (final year) and BSc students (final year). At a postgraduate level, the Department of Haematology in UKZN trains both haemato-pathology registrars (4 year training programme)and the clinical haematology fellows that rotate through the laboratory (1 year) and King Edward Vlll Hospital (3 months).
The Department supports Quality Management for haematology in all laboratories throughout KZN. The pathologists perform outreach visits to specific laboratories in KZN. The Department is also responsible for haemophilia care at King Edward Vlll Hospital (KEH), and much of KZN. The department has worked with the SA Haemophilia Foundation to plan annual patient educational camps and infusional workshops. Dr Hoosen oversees the clinical service at KEH, and performs clinical outreach to Prince Myisheni Hospital. Dr Murugan, Dr Chili and Dr Mothi participate in the clinical service at KEH weekly.
The Department has partnered with CANSA and Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation (BMSF) on a Multiple Myeloma (MM) initiative. The aim is to have a dedicated haematology ward at King Edward Vlll hospital (KEH), with funding approved by BMSF. A Myeloma Patient Support group was launched at KEH in March 2022 (with CANSA and BMSF). Myeloma research has been conducted by Dr Chili, with the aim of improving MM care, and Dr Chili is involved in outreach (education and training in KZN).
