Discipline of Emergency Medicine

ABOUT THE DISCIPLINE

The Division of Emergency medicine is driven by highly motivated specialists who believe in training doctors to deliver a high level of emergency care to all categories of patients that present to a hospital with an emergency. Emergency Medicine bridges the pre-hospital & in-hospital gap in the acute care pathway to provide immediate specialist level care at the “coal face” of the hospital in order to reduce complications and improve patient outcomes. The academic Division of Emergency Medicine at UKZN’s School of Clinical Medicine provides an active teaching program that equips doctors with the knowledge and skills to deliver specialist emergency care of an international standard.

The Division of Emergency Medicine, along with the department of Neurology, have been involved in the ANGELS initiative national stroke committee for the past year.

Angels have scheduled campaigns around Natal during the week of 19-23 February 2018, to raise awareness of stroke, risk factors like hypertension & diabetes, and ensure the public are able to recognise the early signs of stroke and access health care timeously.

Dr Garach spent some time at the first session at the Empangeni taxi rank, arms test uptake and message were both excellent. Further awareness days will be held in Isipingo, Warwick Avenue in central Durban, and Phoenix plaza over the next 3 days; the division will be active at the Warwick Avenue day this Thursday, more pictures will follow.
