Discipline of Rheumatology

About the Discipline

A rheumatology service in KwaZulu-Natal was initiated in the late 1960’s by Dr WG Neil and was subsequently managed by Dr I Chalmers and later Dr PD Naidoo.

There was a major impetus for the development of rheumatology with the endowment of the Aaron Beare Family Chair of Rheumatology in 1992 and the establishment of the Rheumatology Unit.

The Department of rheumatology:

  • Contributes to the education and training of undergraduate medical students and postgraduate students in internal medicine and rheumatology  and the training  of specialist physicians in the sub-speciality of rheumatology
  • Provides a clinical service for patients with rheumatic diseases who are referred from district and regional hospital at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital
  • Undertakes research on a wide spectrum of rheumatic diseases seen in our local communities
  • Engages in outreach activities to promote education about rheumatic diseases to health professionals and the community

The clinical services are provided by the Department of Rheumatology at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. The Department has 11 dedicated in-patient beds for rheumatology patients who are referred from all over KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape. There are four outpatient clinics which are held every week -a connective tissue diseases clinic and new patients clinic are held on Mondays and follow up arthritis clinic s are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
