Emeritus professors, alumni, staff and members of the Seedat family and the general medical fraternity, gathered in person and online to honour the life and legacy of Emeritus Professor Yackoob Kassim (YK) Seedat – a towering figure in South African medicine – during a memorial service streamed live from the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s (UKZN) Nelson R. Mandela School of Medicine.
Opening proceedings, the head of Internal Medicine at UKZN, Professor Nombulelo Magula, said the gathering was not only a moment of mourning but also one of celebration. “We are here not just to mourn but also to celebrate his legacy. It is Professor Seedat’s legacy that formed the foundation on which physicians, scholars and future leaders built their careers.”
Dean of the School of Medicine Professor Refiloe Masekela welcomed the Seedat family, colleagues, alumni and members of the medical fraternity, thanking the family for allowing the University to honour Seedat’s memory. “Today should not be only a day of mourning his life,” said Masekela. “It should be a day where we show profound gratitude to the medical fraternity for a life lived in service to humanity.”
