    ABOUT THE DISCIPLINE

    The Discipline of Neurosurgery is based at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban, South Africa. As a leading tertiary and quaternary care center, it provides comprehensive neurosurgical services to patients across KwaZulu-Natal and also receives referrals from the Eastern Cape Province.

    Our department specializes in the investigation, diagnosis, and treatment of brain and spinal cord disorders in both children and adults. We combine advanced technology with specialized expertise to ensure the highest quality of patient care.

    • Endovascular and Cerebrovascular Surgery

    Multidisciplinary Care and Training

    We pride ourselves on a multidisciplinary approach through collaborations with key units such as the Craniofacial Unit, Neuro-oncology, Neuro-critical Care, Spine, Endocrinology, Movement Disorder Unit, and Neurophysiology Unit. all working together to enhance patient outcomes.

Our consultants actively train and supervise registrars and medical officers, ensuring continued growth in neurosurgical expertise across South Africa.

    • Combined Histopathology and Radiology meetings: every second month, Thursdays.

    POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME

    Registrars in the Discipline of Neurosurgery undertake a 5 year training programme to qualify as Specialist Neurosurgeons. The training is undertaken at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.  The Registrars have to register for a MMed (Neurosurgery) degree with the University of KwaZulu-Natal.  They are required to pass College of Medicine examinations in Neurosurgery which include: FC (SA) primaries (which include neuroanatomy), FC Neurosurg (SA) intermediates and FC Neurosurg (SA) Final. Once they have passed the FC Neurosurg (SA) Final examination and completed their MMed (Neurosurgery) they are eligible to be registered with the HPCSA as Specialist Neurosurgeons.

    Theatre Schedule

    Daily theatre schedule (Monday to Friday) for elective surgery

    24-hour emergency theatre

    OUTREACH PROGRAMS

    The Discipline of Neurosurgery has an active outreach program, which is provided to Grey’s Hospital and RK Khan Hospital.
