The aim of this discipline is to provide a certification of of competence in paediatric surgery, predominantly to graduates, who have come for a period of training/subspecialist experience in paediatric surgery. Graduates will be trained to have the competence to manage paediatric surgical conditions of neonates and children, with specific reference to the cultural context of Africa and the disease profile, in an ethical way taking into account resource limitations.

The department contributes to the training of intern medical scientists, undergraduate medical students (3rd, 4th and 6th year small group teaching and lectures), medical technology (final year) and BSc students (final year). At a postgraduate level, the Department of Haematology in UKZN trains both haemato-pathology registrars (4 year training programme)and the clinical haematology fellows that rotate through the laboratory (1 year) and King Edward Vlll Hospital (3 months).

South African Association of Paediatric Surgeons
The South African Association of Paediatric Surgeons was formed in 1978 as a forum for paediatric surgeons to exchange ideas. A biennial meeting is held on rotation.

South African Children’s Cancer Study GroupThe SACCSG have established a database to record information of children presenting with malignant disease.
