BIOSKETCH
Dr Sipho Mfolozi obtained his MBChB degree from the University of Cape Town in 2001. After completing internship he worked in the United Kingdom for a number of years before returning to the University of Cape Town. During this time he obtained a Diploma in Forensic Medicine from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and a Fellowship in Forensic Pathology from the same college. In 2009 Dr Mfolozi invented an electronic device that calculates time of death of a corpse – the NecroChronometer. He won first and second prizes in the UCT and national phases of the NIC Business Plan Competition in 2009 and 2010, respectively, using the NecroChronometer.In 2011 Dr Mfolozi was awarded the Discovery Foundation Academic Fellowship Award, with which he established a Controlled Climate Laboratory at the University of Cape Town. The laboratory was used to conduct research towards his MMed degree.Dr Mfolozi obtained a Masters in Medicine degree of Forensic Pathology from the University of Cape Town in 2013. In 2014 he registered as a PhD of Forensic Pathology candidate at that university, the aim of which was to describe how the NecroChronometer would work. In 2015 Dr Mfolozi became the recipient of the NRF Thuthuka PhD Grant, with which he established a Numerical Computation Laboratory in collaboration with IT’IS Foundation Switzerland.In March 2018 Dr Mfolozi became the Head of Clinical Department of Forensic Medicine. He is passionate about invention, innovation and research, which he hopes to cultivate into the department.
