BIOSKETCH Dr Safeeya Osman is a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PRS) Specialist at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital. After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2011, she spent several years in General Surgery, during which she conducted Master’s research on the prevalence of gynaecomastia in the Durban Breast Unit. This work, supervised by Dr Ebrahim Mansoor and Dr Ines Buccimazza, was later published in the World Journal of Surgery in 2019. In 2018, Dr Osman transitioned into Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, qualifying as a specialist in 2021. Since then, she has served in the department, coordinating the academic programme for registrars and medical officers while gaining extensive experience in reconstructive procedures for skin cancers, congenital deformities, burns, and complex reconstructions of the breast, lower limb, and head and neck.Working in a multidisciplinary environment, Dr Osman collaborates closely with colleagues from ENT, colorectal, gynaecology, cardiothoracic, dermatology, and oncology specialties. These intricate and often lengthy operations demand creativity, adaptability, and meticulous microsurgical precision. Within her department, she fosters a culture of continuous learning and innovation, where new ideas and alternative approaches to reconstruction are encouraged. Dr Osman is currently co-authoring a paper with Dr Faro and Prof Daya, titled “Less is More,” which explores how unconventional flap designs and staged procedures can achieve superior outcomes in Black patients, underscoring the importance of tailoring reconstructive strategies to individual patient profiles.
