UKZN Master’s Student Expands Research Horizons in Bulgaria

Ms Denisha Govender, a third-year Master of Public Health (MPH) student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), recently returned from a two-month Erasmus+ mobility research exchange programme at the Medical University of Sofia in Bulgaria.

A registered human nutritionist with more than 12 years of experience in public health and community nutrition, Govender was motivated to study abroad by her passion for broadening her research lens through international collaboration. “Public health issues such as non-communicable diseases, nutrition, and lifestyle behaviours cut across borders. Studying abroad allowed me to compare South African and European contexts, strengthen academic networks, and contribute to global knowledge on nutrition and health systems,” she explained.

Her research abroad focused on dietary habits and health behaviours among nurses in Bulgaria, complementing her ongoing study of nurses in KwaZulu-Natal. The project has already yielded results: two scientific articles arising from her work have been selected for presentation at the prestigious 30th Anniversary Scientific Jubilee Conference of Public Health in Sofia this October. “Having my research recognised at such a prestigious platform is both humbling and inspiring,” she reflected.

Adjusting to life in a new country presented challenges, particularly being far from family and adapting to unfamiliar routines. However, Govender said the experience built resilience and adaptability, qualities that have enriched both her professional and personal journey. Among her favourite memories are exploring Sofia’s historic streets, engaging with fellow researchers and students, and immersing herself in Bulgarian culture. Highlights included making essential oils during a Damask rose-picking excursion, learning the traditional Horo dance, and tasting local delicacies such as Banitsa.

She encourages other students to embrace international opportunities: “Studying abroad is not only about academics; it is about stepping into a new world, learning from different systems, and discovering new strengths within yourself. Approach it with an open mind, and the rewards will be far greater than you expect.”

Looking ahead, Govender plans to finalise and publish her master’s research findings. She aims to continue advancing nutrition research and public health policy with a strong focus on global collaboration. Grateful for the support of UKZN, the Erasmus+ programme, and her supervisor, Dr Thembelihle Dlungwane, she hopes her journey will inspire others to add their voices to international conversations on health.
